Intersex Asia is proud to announce the launch of our Asian languages translations of the United Nations Office for the High Commissioner on Human Rights, Free and Equal Campaign Intersex Fact Sheetin 11 languages. The fact sheet is now available for download from Intersex Asia’s website in Bengali, Filipino, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Malay, Nepali, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu and Vietnamese.
The UNFE Intersex Fact Sheet was released in 2015, in 5 official UN languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. This was the first time that an international body recognised the specific human rights of intersex people and was welcomed by the global intersex community.
The fact sheet lays out a definition of intersex people and recognises the right of intersex people to physical integrity, as well as highlighting the myriad ways that intersex people are discriminated against and proposes a set of recommendations to States, the media and individuals on how to promote and protect the rights of intersex people.
Key to the development of the UN Fact sheet in the original 5 languages was that each translation was reviewed and edited by intersex activists who were native speakers of that language. Intersex Asia continued with this model and was able to get each of the 11 translations checked and edited by intersex activists of that language group.
Intersex Asia worked closely with an Asian network of LGBTI activists in Asia for the translations, and appreciates their role as allies to the intersex movement. Intersex people are very much a minority and depend on allies to help them to raise their voices.
Intersex Asia would also like to thank our donors: Astraea, Mamacash and RFSL without which these translations could not have been completed.
