Statement: Intersex Asia releases its first Annual Report

Today is the Intersex Awareness Day. This day is marked to commemorate the first-known public demonstration organised by intersex people. It is a solemn moment for the intersex community across the globe.

The anniversary of this demonstration is observed every year since 2003 and this day serves an occasion for reflection. This year, the anniversary of Intersex Awareness Day is particularly special for Intersex Asia for one particular reason. We are very excited to release our first-ever Annual Report. Establishment of Intersex Asia as a regional network was a major milestone in the Asian Intersex Human Rights movement. 

We have come a long way since 2013 when our network started with a one-member online community, which gradually grew into a larger community with more than 30 intersex members. It was in early 2018 when we decided to formally start Intersex Asia as a regional network when we came together for the first Asian Intersex Forum.

In 2019, IA developed the first strategic framework for our movement to guide its activities and initiatives for 2019 and 2020. This annual report documents the work done towards achieving the objectives which were outlined in the strategic framework. In the past year, Intersex Asia made significant progress on developing as an organisation and strengthened its partnership with members organisations and stakeholders. The collaborations resulted in several exciting projects and events. In the coming years, we would continue to grow ourselves and also continue to do our part in growing the intersex human rights movement in the Asian region.

Releasing the annual report on the Intersex Awareness Day was a conscious call since this document, in a way, shares the work that Intersex Asia did towards spreading awareness on intersex issues. We are immensely grateful to all those who reposed their trust in us and supported us along the way in various capacities. We feel stronger with your support and hope to have your guidance as we grow institutionally and as a movement. 

As the Intersex Awareness week begins its commemoration tomorrow, let us all join to share the stories, lives and experiences of intersex people and spread awareness on intersex human rights.
